Tanda Birama alias Time Signature adalah dua angka yang diletakkan bersusun pada di sisi kanan clef, angka di atas menunjukkan jumlah ketukan dalam tiap bar, sedangkan angka di bawah menunjukkan nilai not yang dihargai sebagai satu ketukan.

Contoh :
4/4 artinya ada 4 ketuk dalam tiap bar, dan not 1/4 dihitung sebagai satu ketuk.
3/4 artinya ada 3 ketuk dalam tiap bar, dan not 1/4 dihitung sebagai satu ketuk.
2/4 artinya ada 2 ketuk dalam tiap bar, dan not 1/4 dihitung sebagai satu ketuk.
6/8 artinya ada 6 ketuk dalam tiap bar, dan not 1/8 dihitung sebagai satu ketuk.

Gambar di atas menunjukkan tanda birama 4/4 (4 ketuk dengan not 1/4). Measure artinya adalah bar. 1 measure/bar bernilai 4 ketuk.

Tanda birama dalam musik ada beberapa macam berdasarkan ketukan (angka yang ada di atas), antara lain :
1. Tanda birama 2 ketuk, disebut Duple. Contoh : 2/2, 2/4
2. Tanda birama 3 ketuk, disebut Triple. Contoh : 3/2, 3/3, 3/4
3. Tanda birama 4 ketuk, disebur Quadruple. Contoh : 4/2, 4/4

Masih ada tanda birama lain yang sering muncul, yaitu 6/8. seringkali terdapat pertanyaan mengenai perbedaan antara 6/8 dengan 3/4, perbedaannya pada ketukan. Tanda birama 6/8 berarti 6 ketuk dalam 1 bar dan 3/4 berarti 3 ketuk dalam 1 bar. Not yang menjadi 1 ketuk pun berbeda, 6/8 memakai not 1/8 untuk 1 ketuknya sementara tanda 3/4 memakai not 1/4 untuk 1 ketuknya. Mari kita lihat gambar di bawah.

Kenapa tanda birama 6/8 tidak boleh ditulis dengan susunan not seperti gambar di atas? Karena tanda birama 6/8, ketukan aksennya berada di ketukan 1 dan 4. ketukan aksen 3/4 ada di ketukan pertama. Maksud dari ketukan aksen adalah bunyi ketukan yang spesial, misalnya : 3/4 = 3 ketuk dalam 1 bar (Dus tak tak, Dus tak tak, dst), 6/8 = 6 ketuk dalam 1 bar (Dus tak tak Dus tak tak, Dus tak tak Dus tak tak, dst). - Tanda Kunci adalah tanda yang ditulis pada awal sangkar nada

- Tanda Kunci berfungsi untuk menunjukkan letak nada

- Macam Tanda Kunci ada 4 macam, yaitu :

1). Kunci C

Kunci C adalah kunci yang menunjukkan letak nada C, digunakan untuk menuliskan nada sedang (misal pada biola alto). Letak nada di garis paranada dengan menggunakan kunci C:

> Kunci C ada 5 macam yang ditulis pada masing-masing garis para nada, yang mempunyai fungsi masing-masing. Jika ditulis pada :

a. garis 1 = untuk menuliskan suara Sopran

b. garis 2 = untuk menuliskan suara Mezzo Sopran

c. garis 3 = untuk menuliskan suara Tenor

d. garis 4 = untuk menuliskan suara Bariton

e. garis 5 = untuk menuliskan suara Bass

> Nada yang sejajar dengan Tanda Kunci adalah nada c1

2) Kunci F

Kunci F adalah kunci yang biasa digunakan untuk menuliskan nada-nada rendah, maka kunci F disebut juga kunci Bass. Letak kunci F pada garis paranada ada di garis keempat, maka menunjukkan nada F di garis keempat. Letak nada di garis paranada dengan kunci F

> Kunci F untuk menuliskan nada rendah ( Alto, Tenor, Bariton)

> Nada yang terletak pada garis ke 4 adalah nada f

3) Kunci G

·      Kunci G adalah kunci yang bentuknya seperti kepala biola. Kunci G disebut juga kunci biola karena kunci G digunakan untuk menuliskan nada-nada tinggi. Kunci G digunakan untuk menunjukkan letak nada G pada garis kedua. Letak nada di garis paranada dengan kunci G

> Kunci G untuk menuliskan suara tinggi ( Sopran, Mezzo Sopran, Alto )

> Nada yang terletak pada garis ke 2 adalah nada g'

Banyak yang menganggap bahwa kunci itu sama dengan akord. Kalau yang di lirik lagu Kuburan “C, A minor, D minor, ke C, ke D lagi”, itu namanya akord (chord), bukan kunci. Kunci dalam music ada 4, yaitu :

Pada Piano Kunci G (Treble Clef) biasa digunakan untuk not balok yang akan dimainkan oleh tangan kanan. Sedangkan kunci F (Bass Clef) biasa digunakan untuk not balok yang akan dimainkan oleh tangan kiri. Penggunaan kunci G dan kunci F secara bersamaan disebut juga grand staff.
